Today is the day. I started my sobriety journey seventeen years ago, on the nose. But by no means was July 14, 2007 my first hangover-free morning nor was it a day of feeling happy, fulfilled, and safe.
Following an extended brownout (not a full blackout — bits and pieces of the night are still there, but the vast majority is gone), I awoke in a hospital bed in New York City at around 8am in a full panic, not knowing where I was or what had happened. I didn’t have my purse or shoes with me and I couldn’t figure out how I had gotten to where I was (both literally and figuratively).
Apparently, while I was being scooped up by paramedics outside Madison Square Garden (yes, one of the busiest and largest concert arenas in the country), someone miraculously found my purse and turned it into security. Everything was still intact. My paper bus ticket. My inhaler for misdiagnosed asth…
